With everyone’s busy lifestyles today, onething which is often overlooked is the importance of proactive assessment and maintenance of their property.
Planned and Re-active Maintenance
This is very important for two main reasons:
- Most insurance policies will stipulate that it is the policy holders requirement to ensure that their insured property is maintained. Again this is often overlooked until one tries to make a claim, only to find they are not fully covered due to wear and tear or poor maintenance.
- Poor maintenance generally results in far more work and subsequent disruption and cost to the homeowner, which could have been avoided with good maintenance
One thing we see first hand on a daily basis is this avoidable damage when a client calls us to look at a problem after things have deteriorated. We also understand many of our clients don’t have the knowledge or time due to their own work and lifestyles to check for these defects before they develop. That’s why we have put together our Home M.O.T check in which the following is checked and condition advised on accordingly;
Interior
- Visually check condition of all plumbing
- Check tap washers and stop cock functioning correctly
- Bleed heating system
- Check walls for presence of mould or damp
- Check all bath, shower and sink seals
- Check all window and door locks and ironmongery
- Check all sockets and switches for damage
- Replace smoke alarm battery and check they are in good working condition
Exterior
- Visual inspection of pitched roofs
- Visual inspection of any flat roofs
- Check condition of all windows for seals and paintwork
- Check all guttering and rainwater goods
- Visual inspection of harling/render and pointing
- Visual check of accessible drainage and soak-always
- Check for any signs of weather or pest related damage
